Italian rugby and the Mutandari complex

Who remembers Tonino Mutandari? The clever painter proposed by the wild Corrado Guzzanti from the antennas of the “Teletrunk”, the channel that was making fun of Telemarket, in one of the many fortunate transmissions of Serena Dandini?
The artist, explained the comedian/art critic, was to be prized for his “extraordinary intellectual honesty,’” because not knowing how to paint, he left this work to others, concentrating only on selling paintings. For this, his TV would make infantile designs devoid of color and/or meaning. Mutandari is not good, but he is honest enough to recognize his incapacity, so much so that he signs his work “I am a pipe”.

Today, rugby is doing the same thing, it is always improvising, and there are fewer professional players. Players speaks without fear of professionalism but continue to go around selling a product without understanding what they are selling, without a well developed plan. “I play for the Magners League and because of this my jersey is worth a million euro a year,” for example. But who? Where, and above all when? The Celtic tournament is an opportunity dripping with ways to grow, without a doubt, but if we don’t first explain to the corporations how we can offer them a return on their investment, their response will always be, “thanks for the offer, we will get back to you”.

On the other hand, the difficulty of positioning a tournament that should launch our country into the highest levels of international rugby circles is under constant scrutiny. We need only think of the television coverage. At the end of a drawn out process, with high hopes on both sides, and with many economic possibilities (once upon a time) unrealized, the Mangers League tournament ended up airing on Dhalia TV, a digital channel that requires a decoder and a smart code in order to receive the signal. A channel that we should all be grateful to because they were the only ones who had the courage to transmit the tournament this season. But, I ask myself: Are we sure that we did all the right things in our broadcasting offer strategy? Is Dhalia the right choice to help rugby gain popularity and viewership?

I am falling to pieces as I write these lines because, unfortunately, a dear friend has decided to leave the world of Italian rugby, after an INCREDIBLE run (in terms of organization, image, and above all, profit) in a difficult town like Rovigo. Why is Antonio Pagano departure to the US a slap in the face of the Italian movement? In Viadana they let him go because of a cock fight, losing the opportunity to use him in order to realize the Aironi project; in Treviso, they could have had a collaborator of the highest level, but did not call him; and the same for the Italian Rugby Federation, that after the departure of Diego Antenozio, lost another prize piece to a movement more than capable of recycling those with half his talent. And now, we have surrounded ourselves with 100, 1000, Tonino Mutandaris. We appreciate the honesty of those who can admit to not being any good and us go on helping those that are in need of saving, accurately avoiding those who, instead, should only be deciding where to go. And with who.
